Meet our City Through the History of Its Streets

Street names in cities often seem to exist only to guide lost travelers, however the story behind street names reveals a past that reflects their true meaning as well as the history of the city itself.

Street names give character and life to the place they refer to and often serve the meaning of a historical landmark for a city. They reveal the politics, culture and ideologies of cities and also provide a common language for the city and its inhabitants.

The placement of 450 smart street name signs with historical information using QR-Code and NFC (Near Field Communication) labels in the historical center of the city is an initiative of the Municipality of Thessaloniki and D. MASOUTIS SA.

D. MASOUTIS SA in the context of Corporate Social Responsibility and its active presence in Thessaloniki wishes to express its interest in the city and the citizens by donating all the necessary equipment for the study, design, construction and placement of the smart street name signs in order to facilitate residents and visitors.

The purpose of this is first to have the needful street signage in the city, for residents and visitors and then to get familiar with the history of the streets we pass every day.

ELLIS NAVMACHIA

During the Battle of Elli, near the mouth of the homonymous cape, on December 3, 1912, the Greek Navy led by Rear Admiral Pavlos Kountouriotis conflicted the Turkish Navy and forced it to retreat in the Strait.


PHASIANOS GIORGOS

Giorgos Phasianos (1907-1957) was a physician in Thessaloniki with extensive social and charitable activity. Inter alia, he was an active member of the Red Cross.


NAVARCHOY VOTSI

Nikolaos Votsis (187-1931) was born in Hydra and he was an officer of the Navy. On October 18, 1912 he sank the Turkish warship Feth-I Bulent inside the port of Thessaloniki. He served as the High Commissioner of Constantinople (1921-1922). He retired in 1922 with the rank of Rear Admiral.


DEMOSTHENES

Demosthenes was a politician and a great orator of the ancient times (384-322 B.C.). He mainly wrote judicial and political speeches. His four Philipics that he directed against King Philip II of Macedonia, are highly renowned.


LEOFOROS NIKIS

LIt was named like this in honour of the victories of the Greek army and especially the liberation of Thessaloniki in 1912. The Greek troops led by King George and Heir Konstantinos paraded in this avenue. Nike was also a goddess of the Greek mythology. (Former Name: VAS.KONSTANTINOU)


ORVILOS

Orvilos is a mountain range in Macedonia, on the borders with Bulgaria. In the ancient times, it is first mentioned by Herodotus and then by Arrian. It was the field of several battles from the Byzantine Times to the Balkan Wars.


DRAGOUMIS ION

Ion Dragoumis was born in 1878. He was a diplomat, politician and intellect. He participated in the Macedonian Struggle and the Balkan Wars. He was one of the founders of the Educational Club. He was murdered in 1920.


VENIZELOU

Eleftherios Venizelos was a politician of modern Greece. He was born in 1864 and he died self-exiled in Paris in 1936. He took part in the Revolution in Crete and he fought for its Union with Greece. He was Prime Minister of Greece in various occasions and he fought for the vision of Megali Idea
