Prophet Elijah lived in the 9th century B.C. He is commemorated by the Orthodox Church on the 20th of July. The street was named after the adjacent church of Prophet Elijah. The church is Paleologan and its architectural style is unique in Thessaloniki. The name of the church is more modern and it is a paraphrase of the older Turkish name Sarayli mosque.
