He is a Saint and a Great Martyr of the Orthodox Church. He was born in AD 280. He became an officer of the Roman army. He was arrested, tortured and he became a martyr for his faith. His memory is closely associated with the history of the city. He is honoured as the Myrrh-streamer, Miracle-worker and Patron Saint of Thessaloniki. The modern church of Agios Dimitrios is built on the location of the Saint’s grave.
