Meet our City Through the History of Its Streets

Street names in cities often seem to exist only to guide lost travelers, however the story behind street names reveals a past that reflects their true meaning as well as the history of the city itself.

Street names give character and life to the place they refer to and often serve the meaning of a historical landmark for a city. They reveal the politics, culture and ideologies of cities and also provide a common language for the city and its inhabitants.

The placement of 450 smart street name signs with historical information using QR-Code and NFC (Near Field Communication) labels in the historical center of the city is an initiative of the Municipality of Thessaloniki and D. MASOUTIS SA.

D. MASOUTIS SA in the context of Corporate Social Responsibility and its active presence in Thessaloniki wishes to express its interest in the city and the citizens by donating all the necessary equipment for the study, design, construction and placement of the smart street name signs in order to facilitate residents and visitors.

The purpose of this is first to have the needful street signage in the city, for residents and visitors and then to get familiar with the history of the streets we pass every day.

AGIAS LAVRAS

Agia Lavra is a historic monastery at Kalavryta. It was founded in the 10th century. Its history is closely linked to the Greek War of Independence of 1821. AGIAS EIRINIS CHRYSOVALANTOU

She is a Saint of the Orthodox Church. She was born in Caesarea, Cappadocia in A.D. 828. She was a nun and the abbess of the Coenobitic Monastery of Great Taxiarches Michael and Gabriel, on the outskirts of Constantinople. She is commemorated on the 28th of July.


AGGELAKI

Konstantinos Aggelakis (1874-1965) was a physician and politician. He was the Mayor of Thessaloniki from 1916 to 1920. He was also member of the committee that drafted the new street plan of Thessaloniki after the great fire of Thessaloniki in 1917.


AGAPIS

It is probably dedicated to one of the three main Christian virtues, along with hope and faith. It is also the name of: a female Saint of the Church, a Christian custom commemorating the Last Supper and the Easter mass.


AGAPINOU SARANTOU

Sarantos Agapinos, born in 1881, was a Lieutenant of the Greek Army and Chieftain of the Macedonian Struggle, known by the nom de guerre Kapetan Agras. He operated in the area of Giannitsa and he was hanged in 1907.
