Meet our City Through the History of Its Streets

Street names in cities often seem to exist only to guide lost travelers, however the story behind street names reveals a past that reflects their true meaning as well as the history of the city itself.

Street names give character and life to the place they refer to and often serve the meaning of a historical landmark for a city. They reveal the politics, culture and ideologies of cities and also provide a common language for the city and its inhabitants.

The placement of 450 smart street name signs with historical information using QR-Code and NFC (Near Field Communication) labels in the historical center of the city is an initiative of the Municipality of Thessaloniki and D. MASOUTIS SA.

D. MASOUTIS SA in the context of Corporate Social Responsibility and its active presence in Thessaloniki wishes to express its interest in the city and the citizens by donating all the necessary equipment for the study, design, construction and placement of the smart street name signs in order to facilitate residents and visitors.

The purpose of this is first to have the needful street signage in the city, for residents and visitors and then to get familiar with the history of the streets we pass every day.

KASTALIAS

KASSANDROU

Kassandros (350-297 B.C.) was a King of Macedonia, husband of Thessaloniki, the daughter of Philipos II. He founded the city of Thessaloniki in 315 B.C. naming the city after his wife.


KARYOTAKI

Kostas Karyotakis was born in 1896 in Tripolis and he suicided in 1928 in Preveza. He studied Law ad he was a lyrical poet and novelist. His poetry was characterized by pessimism, melancholy and drama.


KARIPI

Grigorios Karipis, born in 1858, was a lawyer from Thessaloniki, with significant scientific and national activity. He was a prominent selectman of the city. In the website gis.thessaloniki.gr, the street is mentioned as Karypi.


KARATZA PANAG.

Panagiotis Karatzas was a militant in the Greek Revolution of 1821 and member of Filiki Eteria. He was one of the leaders of the Revolution in Patras. He was murdered in September the same year.


KARATASOU

Anastasios (Tasos) Karatasos (1764-1830) was a Chieftain from Macedonia. He was initiated into Filiki Eteria and a militant of the Greek Revolution of 1821. His son Tsamis (Dimitrios) Karatasos (1798-1861) fought along with his father. Later, he became senior officer and played a leading role in the uprising of Halkidiki in 1854.


KARAOLI -DIMITRIOU TON KYPRION

Michael Karaolis and Andreas Dimitriou were Cypriot militants and members of EOKA. They were sentenced to death and they were hanged in 1956. They are buried at the Imprisoned Graves in Nicosia.


KARMANLI KON. AV.

Konstantinos Karamanlis was born in 1907 in Proti, Serres. He studied at the Law School of the University of Athens. He was a politician and he was elected Minister, Prime Minister and President of the Hellenic Republic. He died in Athens in 1998.


KAPODISTRIOU

Ioannis Kapodistrias was born in Corfu in 1776. He was a diplomat and politician in Russia. He was the first Governor of Greece, after he had been elected in the National Assembly at Troezen (1827), laying the foundations for the organisation of the State. He was murdered in Nafplion in 1831.
