Pytheas of Massalia lived in the 4th century B.C. He was an explorer, astronomer and geographer. He travelled as far as North Europe, arriving on an island that he named Thule. In his writings, he made scientific observations, he explained the phenomenon of the tide and he talked about the north polar circle.
