NAVARINOU SQUARE

Navarino was the name of Pylos in Messinia, during the period of the Venetian Rule.  The historic naval battle of the same name took place off the Navarino Bay between 8 and 20 October 1827. It was a decisive confrontation between the fleets of England, France and Russia, commanded by Rear Admiral Edward Codrington and the Turkish-Egyptian fleet of Ibrahim Pasha of Egypt. The overwhelming defeat of the latter led to the withdrawal of his troops from the Peloponnese, prevented the collapse of the Greek Revolution and contributed to the consolidation of Greek independence.
