Meet our City Through the History of Its Streets

Street names in cities often seem to exist only to guide lost travelers, however the story behind street names reveals a past that reflects their true meaning as well as the history of the city itself.

Street names give character and life to the place they refer to and often serve the meaning of a historical landmark for a city. They reveal the politics, culture and ideologies of cities and also provide a common language for the city and its inhabitants.

The placement of 450 smart street name signs with historical information using QR-Code and NFC (Near Field Communication) labels in the historical center of the city is an initiative of the Municipality of Thessaloniki and D. MASOUTIS SA.

D. MASOUTIS SA in the context of Corporate Social Responsibility and its active presence in Thessaloniki wishes to express its interest in the city and the citizens by donating all the necessary equipment for the study, design, construction and placement of the smart street name signs in order to facilitate residents and visitors.

The purpose of this is first to have the needful street signage in the city, for residents and visitors and then to get familiar with the history of the streets we pass every day.

Pavlos Kountouriotis (1855-1935) was a Rear Admiral. As Commander of the Averof battleship, Chief of the Aegean Fleet, he took part in the victorious sea battles of Elli and Limnos and he liberated almost all Aegean islands. He was elected Minister, Regent and first President of the Republic.


KOUFITSA DIM.

Dimitrios Koufitsas (or Kofitsas) was born in 1901 or 1902 in Chaliki, Trikala and was murdered in 1946 in Thessaloniki. Holding the rank of Squadron Leader, he was Deputy Commander of National Security and Rapporteur of the Extraordinary Court-martial of Thessaloniki.


KRATEROU

Krateros was a Macedonian General of Alexander the Great. He took part in the campaign in Asia. After the death of Alexander the Great, he supported Antipatros. He died in 321 B.C.


KRYSTALLI KOS.

Kostas Krystallis was born in 1868 and died in 1894. He was a poet and novelist. His poems were inspired mainly from nature and life in the countryside.


KYRIAKIDI STILP.

Stilpon Kyriakides was born in 1887 in Komotini and died in 1964 in Thessaloniki. He was a distinguished historian and folklorist, Professor at the Philosophy School, Dean at the University of Thessaloniki and one of the founding members and President of the Society for Macedonian Studies. He left a prodigious amount of work.

Nikos Kessanlis was born in Thessaloniki in 1930 and died in Athens in 2004. He was a student of Yannis Moralis and a distinguished painter. He was Professor and Dean at the Athens School of Fine Arts.
