Phokaia was an ancient Greek city in Minor Asia. It was founded as an Ionian colony, during the first Greek colonism. As a nautical and trade power, the people of Phokaia founded other colonies in the Western Mediterranean Sea, such as Marseille and other on the Black Sea coast. In June 1914, its Greek residents suffered persecution and massacre.
