Halicarnassus was a city in Minor Asia, founded as a colony by Dorian Greeks and it was the most important city of the Doric Hexapolis. It was built in 1000 B.C. by citizens of Troezen. It was the homeland of Herodotus and Dionysius of Halicarnassus. After its destruction in 1922, most of its citizens moved to Herakleion, Crete and founded a settlement named Nea Alicarnassos (New Halicarnassus).
