Salamis is an island of the Saronic Gulf, opposite to Piraeus. In 480 B.C. a battleship between the Persian and the Greek fleet took place there. The victory of Greeks, under the leadership of Themistocles, forced the king of the Persian Empire to retreat from Greece.
